In an exercise of less-is-more, the minimalist black steel box is carved out to reveal a white “barn-wood” porch.
The interior is made rich by the insertion of other boxes. A birchwood box contains the private spaces and squeezes out to embrace a black kitchen-utility box. A birch recess on the side of the living room encases a sitting nook with more storage.
Heavy duty lift-slide doors provide insulation and passive solar gain and make the space feel larger than it is. Care was taken to allow value oriented kitchen appliances and cabinetry to nonetheless support the strong graphic intent of the core.
