The Boat House is a legacy trunk
fallen – or growing – from the forest;
a Tree, inspired by boats, Quonset huts, and longhouses,
both novel and familiar.
About the forest, it was built from the forest,
with the health of future forests in mind.
The untempered Boat House holds paddle boards, kayaks, and small sailboats. An elevated sleeping porch spans interior and exterior decks through bi-fold doors set into a greenhouse wall. A skylit tower-branch hides away a composting toilet with an adjacent grey water bucket sink.
The Boat House was digitally modeled, with CNC-cut white oak ribs laminated off-site. 9 different subtly-shifting ribs were laid up from 4/4 oak less than 6’ long. The weather-resistant white oak frame and cedar rainscreen use a natural silicon-based wood treatment.
