Only 15 minutes south of Lake Superior, near a creek in a mixed northern forest, this minimalist box is a quiet luxury for the owners after years of camping onsite. In respect for the surroundings, they sought a high-performance structure based on Passive House principles—air-tight construction, robust insulation, passive solar gain, and low energy inputs. The design stems from the one-bedroom weeHouse ADU Large model, and was built on-site.
A graphic orange entry void punctuates a white interior defined otherwise only by the minimalist white kitchen bar and a birch dining-seating-sleeping-storage cubby. Large triple-glazed windows allow beneficial passive solar gains in the frigid winter months while providing comfort and maximal exposure to views within the house’s modest footprint.
